Counting the ballots…
Vermont's ballot has essentially two ingredients. Maple takes five entries: the Maple Creemee, Sugar on Snow poured hot into taffy, Maple Baked Beans, Maple Walnut Ice Cream, and Buckwheat Pancakes drowned in syrup. Dairy takes the rest, beginning with the farmhouse Cheddar Cheese that made the state's name and ending with Cheddar Apple Pie. Apples fill the gaps with Apple Cider Donuts and Boiled Cider Pie. Cob-Smoked Ham smokes sweet over corncobs. What Vermont is famous for comes from a tree or a cow, with no third option. So what is Vermont's official state dish? That is what the vote decides.
