North Carolina's ballot draws a line down the middle of the state. East of it, Whole-Hog BBQ chopped with vinegar and pepper. West of it, Lexington-Style BBQ, shoulder only, ketchup permitted. Hush Puppies come with both. The coast sends Calabash-Style Seafood and Atlantic Beach Pie on a saltine crust. The Piedmont answers with Livermush, the Hot Glazed Yeast Donut Winston-Salem exported, and Moravian Cookies. Persimmon Pudding and Sweet Potato Pie close. North Carolina is famous for whole hog, and for refusing to agree on the sauce. So what is North Carolina's official state dish? That question is the whole point.
