“You have to know an auntie to get the best version (or any version!)”
“It’s no secret that huckleberries are a huge part of Montanan culture. Everyone has their own huckleberry picking spot, a secret few are willing to share.”
“Only Montana can make chokecherries palatable.”
“Far leaner than beef, much easier on the diet and a taste of the real west. The Montana club does the best outside myself.”
“Only place i know is whitefish distillery . I made trout campfire style with eggs when i did chuck wagon brekkies! + spuds”
Montana's ballot is mostly hunted, foraged, or picked. Bison Steak and Elk Stew come out of the fall freezer, and Rocky Mountain Trout comes out of the creek. Wild berries carry Huckleberry Pie, Flathead Cherry Pie from the lake orchards, and Chokecherry Pancakes. Camas Root is pit-roasted, a traditional Indigenous food, and Indian Tacos are powwow standard. Butte's mining camps left two things behind: the Pasty and the Butte Pork Chop Sandwich. What Montana is famous for comes home in a truck or a berry bucket. So what is Montana's official state dish? Ten dishes, one vote.
