Massachusetts votes by compass point. North Shore Roast Beef comes thin-sliced on an onion roll, ordered three-way, and South Shore Bar Pizza arrives charred to a laced edge. Fried Whole Belly Clams belong to the same coastline. Boston claims Boston Cream Pie, Boston Baked Beans, and the North End's Cannoli. Clam Chowder and the Lobster Roll are effectively law. Two dialect items close it: the Fluffernutter, and Frappes, which elsewhere are milkshakes. Massachusetts is famous for chowder, and for arguing about everything else. So what is Massachusetts's official state dish? That question is the whole point.
