Maine's ballot is a short season and a long winter. Summer sends the Lobster Roll, Steamers dipped in broth then butter, Lobster Stew, and the bright Red Snapper Hot Dog off the grill. Cold-Water Shrimp arrive briefly and leave. Blueberry Pie uses the tiny wild berries, not the cultivated kind. Winter takes over with Clam Chowder and Red Flannel Hash, turned crimson with beets. The Italian Sandwich and Whoopie Pie work year-round. Maine is famous for lobster, which appears here three separate ways. So what is Maine's official state dish? The ballot is open until November 1.
